My aunt passed on some information to me concerning a possible dilemma I may have in the future with my kittens. She suggests that as they get older they will become more territorial and want their own litter boxes. At this point they came from the same litter and do everything together..and when given the space they get in the litterbox together. Should I make a preemptive strike and buy another litter box (although I totally don't have the space for another) , or wait until I find poop in a random place and take the hint?

Buy a second litter box! Get them used to it.
We got a second cat a few months back and got him his own litter tray straight away. However, for his first few nights in the house we had him and all his stuff in the spare room so he wasn't invading the first cat's space too much. Anyways, long story short... we accidentally closed the door to the spare room, and when first cat was in his litter box second cat decided his best option was to pee all over our corduroy foot stool. Not pleasant! So take a wait and see approach if you like, but when cat's aren't happy with their toilet arrangements they will let you know, and your first warning might not be as neat and tidy and easy to clean up as a little poop in the corner! You have been warned!
1my mom has EIGHT kitties with about 4 litter boxes all around the house and they all share and use each one
2wow that is some feat Lovely 1! I will probably get a second one but now I would like to find a big one but the ones on Petco.com don't see very nice = /
3we've got three cats and three litter boxes -- but it wasn't a territory issue. we didn't get them all at the same time, and they're all different ages; i think maybe we're extremely lucky that they don't mind sharing.
the reason we ended up with three is that, when we had two, we realized we had to clean it out twice a day to keep it as clean as they liked. turns out they're all pretty fastidious, and if it's a little more full than they want, they find other places to go ... not fun!
i asked my mother-in-law, who is a vet tech, and she said that your best bet is to have a box per cat. that way territory and cleanliness are not problems. of course, if you've got eight (WOW!) then that's not practical, but sounds like Lovely_1's mom has it under control
4I've got two cats, sisters who grew up together, and they've got no problems with sharing their litter box. Granted, it's a big one, and it gets dirty twice as quick, but they seem fine with it.
I'd go based on how the cats act - are they the type who are together all the time and share food dishes, or are they already demonstrating territoriality?
Either way, best of luck!
